In the Fire

A psychological thriller set in late 19th-century Colombia where superstition left no room for psychoanalysis which was not yet recognised as a science: a 38-year-old American widowed psychiatrist arrives at a Colombian hacienda after being called upon to resolve the case of a disturbed child. It was the child’s mother who called her, worried about the insistent accusations by a local priest and peasants – plagued by mysterious adverse events – that the little boy was in fact the devil. When the doctor arrives, she discovers that the mother of the child is dead and that his father has also started to believe in the alleged possession of the little boy. As the woman attempts to psychoanalyse the child, the ominous events intensify and her ‘cure’ becomes a race to save the boy from the fury of the townspeople and perhaps even from herself, as she too begins to fear that what is happening on the farm might have something to do with something horrific and supernatural.
